rats are standard pets...and we kill them left and right in eq2.  but it is only a game..i am pretty sure no actual rats were killed in the making of the game.

Take it back and ask for a refund?? or an exchange. and try  not to feed it pepper.

I'm not saying I'll cancel cause a pet died.

Here is what happened in WoW to me and I stopped playing the beta the minute it happened and will make sure I never support Blizzard with my dollars ever again. I was in a cottage with an NPC whose name I can't remember but her title was "Crazy Cat Lady" another player came in and started killing her house cats.

If this kind of thing is going to be happening in Everquest 2 I can save myself some wasted time and cancel my pre-order right now.

I don't think what's being said here is that the cat was attacked and killed.  He fed it too much pepper and it died.  But according to the pretty red name, that isn't supposed to happen, the kitty is only supposed to PLAY dead.  I sincerely doubt that SoE is going to advocate pet killing in game.

Geezus...lighten up.  It's a game.  It's not RL. 

I also love my pets at home...dearly.  I have raised puppies from the time they were 8 weeks old and kept them until I just "had" to put them down because their quality of life was deteriorating at 15 years +.  I have a manx housecat now named Gracie that I sometimes just want to kill because she brings in LIVE mice through the doggy doors and plays with them and they get loose from her every now and then.  My male Doberman just watches them run past his paws...then looks at me as if to say..."Look what that dang cat drug in."  Frankly I think the dead-kitty thing is hilarious.  Sometimes I may want to feed pepper 10 times to my own in-game kitty to get back at my housecat here.

But...I can distinguish between RL killing of house pets and in-game...

Wild rats wont run up to you expecting to be petted. Where I grew up some neighbor children killed cats and dogs. After you see a puppy come up to someone wagging its tail and watch them hit it with a baseball bat or see them picking up a purring kitten and drowning it you start to have no tolerence for killing these pets even in a video game. I would feel as strongly if it had been rats or pigs or badgers but this is a game and the killing of dogs or cats on purpose is too close to the real world for me.

By the way that was 38 years ago when I saw those neighborhood boys killing those puppies and kittens and I still remember it so vividly.

Killing of pixelated people is still okay, right?
Because I have a few bad guys left to kill, it would be a shame if they just played dead.
 
EDIT: By the way, there's a huge difference between feeding a cat a handful of peppers and having a bad reaction to smacking it with a bat.  Pets aren't attackable, and it's only your fault if your pet ends up in bad shape, not due to someone else.
